October is the best month of the year. It’s not because football is in full-swing or Halloween is around the corner. October is National Dental Hygiene Month! Have you done anything to celebrate this exciting time?
The Purpose Of National Dental Hygiene Month
National Dental Hygiene Month is designated to help celebrate the excellent work that dental hygienists do, in addition to helping make people aware just how important good oral health is. The month typically centers around four main themes –
- Brushing – The American Dental Association recommends that you brush for two minutes, twice a day. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush to do so.
- Flossing – You should do this at least once a day to remove plaque and food particles that are lodged.
- Rinsing- When accompanied with brushing and flossing, rinsing drastically reduces your risk of infection and decay. Rinsing can reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth.
- Chewing – This is less about how you chew, more so than what you chew. Chewing sugarless gum immediately following a meal encourages saliva production, which helps wash away excess food particles and bacteria.
National Dental Hygiene Month is meant to spark conversation and raise awareness about these healthy habits. If you do not routinely practice the four recommended steps, there’s no better time than the present to begin!
