Wisdom Teeth
July 12th, 2011
Wisdom teeth pain can be constant for some people, while other people only experience pain and discomfort when chewing food or touching the area. The pain can be a sign of impacted wisdom teeth, which occurs when wisdom teeth are prevented from emerging by the jaw bone or other teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth are more difficult to remove, leave you at greater risk for complications from surgery, and can permanently damage bones and other teeth. If you think you may be experiencing wisdom teeth pain, you should make an appointment today! Your dentist will be able to tell you if your pain is actually wisdom teeth pain.

Periodontal Infections and Heart Disease
April 27th, 2011
Recent studies suggest possible links between periodontal infections and heart disease. Researchers have reported that the most common strain of bacteria found in plaque can cause blood clots that induce heart attacks when they escape into the bloodstream. To explain the relationship between heart and periodontal infections, some experts hypothesize that bacteria present in infected gums can come loose and move throughout the body. It is possible that once bacteria reach the arteries, they can irritate in the same way they do the gum tissue, causing arterial plaque to buildup in the arteries. This accumulation of bacteria can cause arteries to harden and restrict blood-flow and potentially result in a heart attack or stroke. Even though the research is not conclusive at this point, it’s still important to try to keep your mouth healthy and help prevent gingivitis. Interestingly, there are some conditions that contribute to the onset of gum disease. Diabetes, for example, can inhibit the immune system and make sufferers more vulnerable to infection. Also, pregnant women can have a higher incidence of gingivitis.

It’s Not Easy Being Green
March 26th, 2011
To quote the famous words of Kermit the Frog, “It’s not easy being green.” Of course, Kermit’s lament was not enviornmentally motivated but rather related to his “skin” tone. We have brought a green culture to our office for the rest of the year. In a world of throw-away plastics and super conveniences, being “green” is not always easy.
So, how are we being green? Our digital x-rays emit 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays and we are not disposing large quantities of toxic film developing solutions. Our electronic patient contact system, Smile Reminder, eliminates tons (well, at least, pounds) of throw away correspondence over the course of a year. Email and text messaging has also enabled us to save a few trees, energy, and fuel. Under Francine’s leadership, we are recycling as much as possible from our lunchroom and all of our magazines and newspapers. We believe that all of these small things add up to create big benefits for our enviornment. If everyone does their part everyday, we are making the world a better, greener place to live!

Tooth Decay
March 8th, 2011
Tooth decay and dental cavities are among the most common health problems in adults. They can be a significant cause of pain and discomfort and can lead to deteriorating oral health over time. It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of tooth decay and dental cavities, and to be aware of which areas of your mouth are most prone to get them.
Maintain a regular routine of brushing, flossing and rinsing. Make your dental hygiene routine a habit. Have your spouse, children, or roommates remind one another to follow the routine daily, and make it a priority to take better care of your teeth and mouth to prevent dental cavities. Looking out for vulnerable areas of your mouth and maintaining a diligent daily oral hygiene routine can often avoid the formation of dental cavities. A mouth without tooth decay and dental cavities will leave you feeling healthier and happier.

Your Child’s Healthy Smile Starts With You
February 24th, 2011
Most people are unaware that caring for your child’s teeth should start before birth. Pregnant moms should aim to keep a healthy mouth. Frequent cleanings help to avoid problems. It is important to have maternal teeth free of decay because a mother’s decay-causing bacteria can be transmitted to her child.
Children’s oral healthcare habits today will have an impact on their health as an adult. As your child’s first tooth erupts, consult with the dentist regarding scheduling a first dental visit. It is advantageous for the first dental visit to occur within six months after the first tooth erupts. By starting visits at an early age, you will help your child build a lifetime of good dental habits.

Dental Vibe
January 10th, 2011
“There’s a Whole Lot of Shaking Going On” was a very popular rock-n-roll song during the mid 50’s. We have a revival of “Shaking” going on at Smiles On Broadway with a new device to lessen what our patients feel when they receive anesthetic injections. The DENTAL VIBE is a new and revolutionary instrument that is gently rested on an injection site just prior to administering the injection. The instrument is placed at the site of the injection and vibrates at a very high frequency. Most patients have described it as a tickling sensation. This tickling vibration confuses the nerves in the area of the injection and it prevents our patients from feeling the sensation of the injection.
This phenomenon is described by the “Gate Control Theory” of pain transmission. We are delighted that our patients have noticed a significant reduction in what they feel from our injections. We are always striving to make our patients’ experience in our office as comfortable as possible. For the majority of our patients who have always welcomed the shoulder massages given by our assistants to divert their attention during injections, we want to assure them that these will be continuing. The incredible success of our use of the DENTAL VIBE will not necessitate the termination of this comforting practice.
When you are in our office, please ask us to show you our DENTAL VIBE and if you do require an injection, it will be our pleasure to show you how helpful it is in making the experience as positive as possible.
