One of the biggest focuses at Smiles on Broadway is helping patients who are fearful of going to the dentist. Sedation dentistry provides a completely calm and relaxed atmosphere and state of mind. One of the greatest advantages to having dental care under sedation is that most patients finish their appointment with little to no recollection of the process.
If the very notion of visiting the dentist's office causes you to feel anxious, you are not alone. Millions of Americans avoid getting the dental care they need because of a very real, and in some cases debilitating, fear of undergoing dental work. In many of these cases, this fear is rooted in bad dental experiences; in others, the sights and sounds of the typical dental office are sufficient to triggering their anxiety.
Fortunately, at Smiles on Broadway, you can expect a dental experience that is anything but typical.
Guided by our experienced dentist, Dr. Steven Katz, the entire Smiles on Broadway team is devoted to making your appointment the most pleasant, relaxing, and comfortable dental visit you have ever had. We are sensitive to the unique needs of all patients, especially those who are taking bold measures to overcome their anxiety and seek out the dental care they need. We appreciate the trust such patients place in us and are proud to accommodate them in any way we can, hopefully redefining how they view dentistry in the process.
Safe, effective sedation dentistry at our Long Island practice is just one of the ways that we can make your appointment as comfortable as possible. Sedation dentistry will allow you to undergo even complex procedures with no recollection whatsoever of the work that was done. While you will remain awake and alert enough to respond to stimuli during your appointment, you will experience no discomfort and be largely oblivious to your surroundings.
Sedation dentistry is also ideal for patients who wish to undergo multiple procedures in a single visit, as well as those with sensitive gag reflexes.
If you would like further information about sedation dentistry, please contact our Long Island dental practice today. We would be pleased to explain how dental sedation can transform how you view the dental experience.
What Is Dental Sedation?
There are several methods of dental sedation, but at Smiles on Broadway, we employ what we feel is the safest and most dependable method, oral conscious sedation. This technique involves no IV needles, but rather a simple pill that patients take an hour before their appointment. This pill puts patients in a state of utter relaxation, but allows them to remain conscious and able to respond to questions and other verbal cues. They emerge from their appointment with all of the benefits associated with, but absolutely no recollection of, the treatment they received.
Patients who elect to undergo treatment under sedation must arrange to be driven to and from our Long Island office for their own safety. The sedative, itself, is entirely safe.
The Past Is Past - Smile at Your Bright Future
One of the primary reasons people are nervous about visiting the dentist is because they are afraid they will be judged for the state of their oral health. At Smiles on Broadway, we absolutely do NOT judge our patients for their dental pasts; we work with our patients toward achieving the beautiful, healthy smiles that will allow them to feel better about their futures. We understand that, for those who have avoided dental care for any reason, the decision to come see us was not an easy one to make. We strive to honor that decision by treating such patients with the respect, admiration, and gentleness they deserve.
If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from dental anxiety, we encourage you to give us a chance to change the way you think about dentistry. Dr. Katz routinely conducts consultations on the park bench outside of Smiles on Broadway so that particularly anxious patients can be put at ease before ever entering our office. Our dentist is truly interested in getting to know you, including any apprehensions you have about receiving care. If you've had a bad dental experience in the past, we want to know about it so that we can do everything we can to avoid those elements of your care that you didn't like. We will never push you toward making a decision regarding your care that you truly don't wish to make. Although we will honestly advise you at every stage of your treatment, we will listen closely to what you have to say and respect your decisions.
As you will discover, dental sedation is just one component of an anxiety-free appointment. Our team of compassionate professionals truly care about you and will make you feel supported and respected every step of the way.
If desired, we can perform general oral hygiene services while you are under sedation, as well. Whatever we can do to make you feel as comfortable as possible, we will gladly do.
Other Candidates for Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is not exclusively reserved for those who suffer from dental anxiety. It is also useful for patients who wish to combine multiple procedures into as few treatment sessions as possible. In some cases, we are able to perform years' worth of dental work in a single appointment while patients are under sedation, saving them time and money in the process.
For less extensive treatments, we can control the level of sedation so that its effects wear off more quickly than it would for longer appointments.
