Are You a Candidate for an Implant-Supported Bridge?

If you are missing two or more teeth, you may be a candidate for an implant-supported bridge. For those patients who are missing a large number of teeth, an implant-supported crown or denture may be a more appropriate treatment. To qualify for any type of dental implants, you must have a strong, healthy jawbone. Fortunately, if you have suffered jawbone recession due to tooth loss, our dentists can perform several preparatory surgeriessuch as bone graftingto restore your candidacy for treatment. In addition to having a strong jawbone, you should have overall good oral and physical health. Your dentist will check for gum disease, and he or she will consider your health history before determining your candidacy for dental implants.

Receiving an Implant-Supported Bridge

At Smiles on Broadway, we take great care to perform highly precise and personalized treatment. We will use our state-of-the-art technology, including our iTero® Element™ Intraoral Scanner to take pictures of your mouth. This imaging device produces a 3-D model of your teeth and gums, allowing us to design a bridge that will blend with your natural teeth. Dr. Salem or Dr. Katz will also use x-rays of your jaw to determine the precise placement of your implant posts. In this way, your dentist can provide the strongest possible foundation for your bridge and minimize the surgery’s impact on your jaw.

Unlike a removable prosthetic, an implant-supported bridge will never slip out of place. Therefore, with implants, you can eat all of your favorite foods, and you could feel more confident when you smile.

Once you and your dentist have approved the treatment plan, we can begin planning your surgery. On the day of your procedure, your dentist first will numb the treatment area. If necessary, we can also provide other sedation options so your surgery will be virtually stress-free. Then he will create small incisions in your gums, into which titanium posts will be inserted. An implant-supported bridge typically requires two implants, though additional posts may sometimes be required. Following surgery, your jawbone will fuse with the implants. This healing period will take approximately four to six months. Afterwards, you will return to our office, and your dentist can attach your custom-made dental bridge.

The Benefits of Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges offer many benefits, such as:

  • Stability: Unlike a removable prosthetic, an implant-supported bridge will never slip out of place. Therefore, with implants, you can eat all of your favorite foods, and you could feel more confident when you smile.
  • Durability: Dental implants will usually last for the rest of your life. Of course, your dental restorations may need to be replaced, but properly caring for them can ensure their longevity, as well. You can care for restorations as you would care for your regular teeth by brushing, flossing, and scheduling regular dental exams.
  • Jawbone health: Implants are unique because they will halt jawbone degeneration. Like the tooth roots that they replace, they will send regenerative signals to your jaw, stimulating bone growth.
  • No alteration of natural teeth: In contrast to an implant-supported bridge, a traditional bridge is placed on top of your natural teeth, requiring the removal of a significant amount of dental tissue.
